From once to twice a week

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission plans to double the frequency of its Commitments of Traders Report by the end of 2026, Chairman Michael S. Selig announced on October 27.

Under the new schedule, Monday positions will appear on Wednesday and Wednesday positions on Friday, each at 3:30 p.m. ET. The gap between the data and its publication shrinks from three days to two.

Why the agency is changing it

The CFTC tied the move to its recent Request for Comment and to feedback from the agricultural community, saying it wants traders in farm markets to get position data sooner. Selig said “COT Reports have been an important source of transparency for decades.”

The Division of Data is running the project, which relies on modernization and automation. The agency says accuracy will be maintained.

What it means for positioning traders

The COT Report is one of the most closely followed positioning data sets in futures. Two snapshots a week instead of one give a fresher read on how commercial and speculative groups are placed, and they should make it easier to see a shift in positioning while it is still under way.

Anyone whose routine is built around the Friday release will need to add a Wednesday check. The announcement gives no exact start date beyond the end of 2026, so the schedule itself is the next thing to look for.
