The numbers that matter

Profit factor

gross profit ÷ |gross loss|

Above 1 the account made money; robust strategies usually sit between 1.3 and 2 over hundreds of trades.

Expectancy

win% × average win − loss% × |average loss|

What one trade is worth on average, after fees. In R, it tells you the edge independently of size.

Max drawdown

largest fall from an equity peak

The pain you lived through. Prop firm rules and your own psychology both live here.

Sharpe & Sortino

mean(daily P&L) ÷ σ × √252

Return per unit of risk. Sortino only penalises losing days. Days without trades count as zero, so nothing is flattered.

SQN

√min(N,100) × mean(R) ÷ σ(R)

Van Tharp's system quality score: 2 is average, 3 good, 5 excellent. Needs a stop on each trade to use R.

Statistical significance

t = mean ÷ (σ ÷ √N)

How likely it is that your results are luck. The journal shows the p-value and a bootstrap probability that your edge is real.

Import from your platform

Supported exports — step-by-step instructions for each one are in the import window and in the guide:

Your data stays yours

The journal runs entirely in your browser and stores everything in its local database (IndexedDB). Nothing is sent to Trading Evolution or anyone else: no account, no upload, no tracking of your trades. Because of that, clearing your browser data erases the journal — use “Download a backup” from the ⋯ menu, and restore it on any device.

Frequently asked questions

Is this trading journal really free?

Yes. There is no subscription, no trade limit and no account. Everything runs in your browser.

Which platforms can I import from?

NinjaTrader 8, MetaTrader 4 and 5, Tradovate, TradingView, cTrader, Rithmic R | Trader Pro, Interactive Brokers, prop-firm platforms and crypto exchanges — plus any CSV file, whose columns you can match by hand.

Where is my data stored?

Only in your browser's local database on this device. Nothing is uploaded. Download a backup file to keep a copy or to move your journal to another computer.

Does it work for futures, forex, CFDs and crypto?

Yes. Futures point values (NQ, ES, CL, GC and their micros, Eurex contracts) are built in, and P&L in your platform's currency is used for forex, CFDs and crypto.

What should I write in a trading journal?

For each trade: the setup, the plan (entry, stop, target), the result, your emotion, any mistake and a screenshot. For each day: a pre-market plan and a post-session review. The guide explains the full routine.

What is a good profit factor?

Above 1 the account made money. Over hundreds of trades, 1.3 to 2 is solid. Very high values on few trades usually mean the sample is too small.

How does the Monte Carlo simulation work?

It builds thousands of possible futures by drawing your real trading days (or trades) at random, keeping your edge but changing the order and luck. You get the chance of profit, typical and worst-case drawdowns and the risk of ruin.

Can I track a prop firm evaluation?

Yes. Enter the profit target, the max loss (static or trailing at end of day), the daily loss limit and the consistency rule: the journal shows your remaining cushion and the simulated chance of passing.

How do I calculate R-multiples?

Add the stop price to a trade: the initial risk is the distance to the stop × quantity × point value, and R = net result ÷ initial risk.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes, the journal works in any modern mobile browser. The data on your phone is separate from your computer; use a backup file to move it.
